Ransomware, targeted phishing, exploitation of unpatched vulnerabilities: the attack surface widens with every new digital service deployed. NIST finalized its first three post-quantum cryptography standards in 2024 (ML-KEM, ML-DSA, SLH-DSA), setting the regulatory foundation for a transition that is now accelerating: several deadlines converge in late 2026 and early 2027, between the scheduled end-of-life of certain existing standards and new acquisition requirements for sensitive systems. The recommended approach rests on crypto-agility: separating application logic from the underlying cryptographic provider, so one algorithm can be swapped for another without rewriting the systems built on top of it.
